A personal shopping experience fit for a movie montage—complete with positivity, encouragement and understanding. Or, in simpler words: support.
When I started rebuilding my life after surviving breast cancer, that’s what I daydreamed of whenever I looked in my closet. To feel that spark of excitement, of outfit inspiration, instead of the sadness and insecurity that had taken its place. To rewrite a hard reminder of what I’ve been through back into the positive.
The spark of this idea—that my own struggle was, perhaps, not unique—came out of that initial healing. And in the years that followed, it slowly took shape in the back of my mind, just waiting for me to be ready to see it. And then ready to act on it. Five years later, it’s now time.
Time to share the result of our Reclaim You post-cancer style makeovers featuring two Western New York breast cancer survivors—and it’s somehow an even more special, and powerful, moment than I imagined.

“While cancer does not define me, it has shaped me. I look at life differently by loving and appreciating things with much more enthusiasm, relishing time with family and friends. I have had so much support and have experienced the kindness of people, as I recently did when selected for the Reclaim You post-cancer style makeover. I received beautiful clothes from ANNARLETTE, had my hair done at Fawn & Fox Salon, makeup application as well as a makeup lesson from Laura Amaya Beauty, pretty earrings from Gretchen at Peg’s Hardware, Erin my fashion advisor who is a professor at Buffalo State and finally the staff at Buffalo Magazine. These generous women truly made me feel like a queen for a day and provided me with a memory I will treasure.”
THE Jumpsuit: Jumpsuits always stand out and are the perfect fashionable option for individuals opting to wear a breast prosthetic. This stylish jumpsuit effortlessly blends a unified and well-tailored appearance, allowing for easy adjustment with an added snap to accommodate a mastectomy bra. With its puffed sleeve design, Karen found just the right amount of arm coverage, while the wide belt adds a delightful pop of color. But the true statement piece is her purse! Embrace your sparkle and shine. – Erin Habes

“This makeover has been something I will never forget! It took a negative experience and turned it into a light at the end of the tunnel. Before this, I refused to look at clothing because it has been uncomfortable, trying to find clothing with one breast and with my weight. After working with Erin and Danielle, and the rest of their crew, it made me realize that this is not the end of the road for me. Anything is possible!”
The LBD: Accessories can be a powerful tool for expressing personal style and boosting confidence. Bold statement necklaces, earrings and bracelets divert attention and can enhance your overall style. Experimenting with different accessories, like these cat-eye frames and embellished belt, can also be a fun way for survivors to discover their own fashion identity. – Erin Habes

Crochet moment: Following a mastectomy, it becomes crucial to discover clothing that complements your new body shape. One approach to working with the chest area is using layers and textures in your styling. Tops and dresses featuring ruffles, pleats, draping and textured elements can help achieve a visually balanced silhouette. This crochet dress and cardigan, adorned with laced detail in the front, acts as an excellent camouflaging technique. This two-piece look allows you to mix, match and layer with ease. – Erin Habes
