One of the many pleasures of growing up close to Canada was the commercials for Canadian entertainment picks that aired back in the day. You know what I mean — Marineland, “Phantom of the Opera” at the Pantages Theater (“Buy “Phantom” by phone!”), and, of course, African Lion Safari.
The latter left me wide-eyed as a child. Lions would literally chill by your vehicle? In Canada?! I never made it to African Lion Safari, but I’ve always recognized the joy that comes from animal encounters. Here are some local options to get up close and personal with all types of animals and have a truly memorable experience.

What is it? This Niagara Falls favorite is home to more than 120 species of animals including marine mammals, penguins and more than 1,200 fish and invertebrates.

300 Parkside Ave., Buffalo
What is it? We all know the Buffalo Zoo’s lovely grounds and many animal habitats on Parkside Avenue, but perhaps less known are its encounters.
What can we see? Head behind the scenes and get up close to giraffes, rhinos and bison as you learn about their diets, enrichment, training and more from experienced zookeepers.

What is it? Hawk Creek houses more than 100 permanent residents. Tanya Penksa says that a visit offers “a rare opportunity to stand face-to-face with incredible wildlife, discover their stories and leave with a deeper connection to the natural world and your role in protecting it.”
What can we see? Animals include rescued hawks, owls, eagles, falcons, reptiles and wild cats. In addition to regular public events, the center offers raptor experiences, private tours, a trainer’s apprentice program and even a chance to feed a porcupine.

Hidden Valley Animal Adventure in Varysburg
What is it? A safari park offering guided, open-air bus tours or self-driven adventures. A few extra dollars gets you a cup of feed that entices the animals even closer for a snack.
What can we see? The lengthy list includes alpaca, American bison, camels, ostriches, yaks and zebras. Kids might enjoy the “Small Animal Adventure” featuring goats, sheep and mini donkeys.
What is it? This educational animal outreach company brings hands-on programs to schools, birthday parties and other events.
What can we see? Animal ambassadors—many of whom are rescues or confiscated, unwanted pets—include snakes, lizards, alligators, turtles, tortoises, amphibians and bugs.

What is it? Prehistoric World features exotic reptiles and amphibians from around the world in a tropical environment.
What can we see? Frogs, snakes, turtles and other reptiles. A variety of experiences are available, from feeding the animals to being “zookeeper for a day.” Scheduled public tours and by-appointment private tours are available.
What is it? Available for events and other bookings, Spencer’s offers live animal demonstrations and petting zoos.
What can we see? Animals include chickens, parrots, ducks, rabbits, chinchillas, tortoises and turtles. Fan favorite “Rainbow Chicken” is vibrantly colored with safe, non-toxic dyes.
