Matthew Crane is a self-described messy painter. If you get up close to one of his pieces, you can see the big, nasty, gnarly brushstrokes. With textures built up on top of each layer, he wants things to have a feel.

That might have happened by accident 20 years ago, but today he can visualize in his head the mistakes he made in the past that could actually work out in a very cool way.

"I find myself spending time and patiently, intentionally making my paintings look like I had done them 20 years ago,” the Hamburg native says. “Now I'm patiently making the haphazard paintings.”
