For some couples, falling in love can feel like an act of fate—you are destined to meet your “one” because the universe wills it to be so. For others, it’s more of an act of faith—an instinct built around the confidence that you just know you are with the right person. But what happens if it’s a combination of both? Well, it’s a desirable beginning to a truly great love story.
Camille and Jalen Wright found themselves in the right moment at the right time: Buffalo’s Renovation Church at the end of summer 2021. They were strangers attending a meeting to become part of the church’s worship team, but for Camille, that serendipitous pull of attraction in Jalen was immediate.
“I had a lot of interest in him early on,” she says. “I loved his personality—he was funny and cool, and I wanted to get to know him better.”
While Jalen thought she was “really nice on the eyes,” and he loved her appreciation for culturally Black gospel songs, he kept his distance.

“She tried hard to date me, asking me out for ice cream, and I kept saying no,” he says, laughing. “I had never dated a white girl before and I was worried about biases, but now Camille is the first and last relationship with a white woman I will ever have.”
Fate and faith brought them together for a concert with the church’s worship team several months later. Between songs, Camille and Jalen chatted about their desire to move abroad; to their surprise, it happened to be the same location: Africa. Camille had lived in Zambia in 2019.
“When Camille told me she wanted to go back to Africa, it was like a light bulb exploded, and we clicked,” he says. “I envisioned falling in love with her and exploring this connection. I knew I was going to marry her right then. We got ice cream two weeks later.”
From that momentous first date in May 2022, Camille and Jalen spent hours in late-night conversations and playing games (their favorite pastime), getting to know each other.
“We felt like we were in our universe,” says Camille. “And that’s how we fell in love.”
After their “very natural and organic” engagement in July 2023 under their favorite tree playing their favorite card game, they planned an equally easy-going wedding for October—just three months away.
Day-of details
About 120 guests were invited to The Bank of East Aurora, a stunning heritage building of 1920s old-world romance, for the ceremony and cocktail hour. Camille, a self-described “fuss-free bride,” did her own hair and makeup. Jalen pieced his suit together from his closet and an emerald velvet jacket on loan from his dad.
They decided against a bridal party and only asked that their loved ones wear fall-friendly colors for the wedding photos: burgundy, navy, burnt orange and shades of green.
One non-negotiable was the flowers, one of Camille’s biggest loves. Her bouquet was a seasonal mix of blooms from Maureen’s Buffalo Wholesale Flower Market, where Jalen bought her flowers throughout their relationship.
Post-wedding, the Wrights went to Mint Mojito Bar with 30 of their immediate family members.
“We’re not party people, and to us, it was more valuable to mingle with a smaller group of loved ones so we could share in this moment together,” says Jalen.
Fast-forward a year into married life, and Camille recently started a job as a nurse, the couple are heading on a Caribbean honeymoon for their first anniversary, and preliminary plans are underway for their eventual move to Africa. But they remain the most excited about the little things.
“I love that I can wake up with my best friend every day,” says Jalen. “And seeing glimpses of what our future will look like. It’s just so exciting.”
