When Kristina Wesolowski opened The Rooted Cup in Lancaster earlier this year, she wasn’t just launching another cafe—she was creating the kind of space she once needed herself. Following personal struggles with addiction, Kristina experienced loss and burnout that prompted her to rethink what wellness, community and comfort could look like.
The result is a cozy, intentional space built on the idea that connection and celebration don’t need to revolve around alcohol.
“We wanted to create a space where everyone feels seen and safe,” Kristina explains. “Whether you’re sober, sober-curious or just want a night out without alcohol, you deserve to feel welcome.”
The cafe’s open, movable seating allows groups of all kinds to make the space their own, from book clubs to homeschool groups to 12-step celebrations, providing a “third space” where people can gather, relax and belong outside of work and home. Late evening hours make it a great go-to option for socializing after work, filling in the gap so that going out doesn’t always have to mean drinking.

While the food menu features allergy-friendly grab-and-go options, The Rooted Cup’s handcrafted drinks are its heart and soul.
“Tea is so versatile and underappreciated,” Kristina says. “People think of it as simple, but it can be layered and complex and really comforting.”
The best-selling LFD Latte, featuring cinnamon apple red tea with house-made cinnamon-vanilla syrup and vanilla foam.
Each drink is made to order with local company Elmhurst’s plant-based milks and house-made syrups. Their most popular is the LFD Latte, named in honor of the Lancaster Fire Department. It blends cinnamon apple red tea with house-made cinnamon-vanilla syrup and is topped with vanilla foam. The comforting, gently spiced favorite has quickly become their bestseller.
Beverage flights are also a customer favorite, from lemonade and iced tea to seasonal apple cider and hot chocolate, enabling customers to try more of the cafe’s menu. The former come with customizable syrup flavors and sugar rims, offering a playful, elevated experience that still feels approachable.
“Flights let people try something new without feeling intimidated,” Kristina says.
From the items in their plant-based pantry to their carefully curated collection of botanical sodas and herbal seltzers, The Rooted Cup is intentionally designed to make people feel that they don’t need to justify their choices and will be embraced for who they are.
Less than a year after opening, customers have already shared heartfelt stories of the impact of the cafe in the community.
“A woman read our decal on our front window that says ‘sober space’ and started crying because she now knows that she has a place to go,” Kristina says. “That’s what it’s about; creating something that helps people feel connected –without explanation, without apology.”
“We wanted to create a space where everyone feels seen and safe,” says owner Kristina Wesolowski.
