Temporary holiday shops offer unique and local gifts

The hunt for holiday gifts is officially on. Instead of battling the mall crowds this year, consider one of Western New York’s many holiday pop-up shops.

From handmade to vintage to Buffalo-themed wares, local holiday pop-up shops are just like they sound: temporary, limited-time-only retail spaces, set up in office buildings, empty storefronts, museums and more. They’re also a great excuse to explore a new destination or neighborhood; many are held in venues throughout the city.

Some highlights: on Dec. 2, Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum on Porter Avenue hosts the 7th annual Queen City Market, where local artisans sell handmade and vintage items. Or visit Buffalo RiverWorks that same day for the SevenOneSixmas Festival, where you’ll find Buffalo-themed gifts and wares.

A City of Buffalo Artists Market returns to the Ellicott Square Building for its holiday edition on Dec. 6. Browse over 50 local vendors while enjoying food, a cash bar and holiday music, all in a historic downtown setting.

On Dec. 9, Becker Farms in Gasport will host their Holiday Sip ‘n Shop. It features offerings from 25 local artisans and national vendors, as well as wine samples from Vizcarra Vineyards and fresh, homemade Becker Farms baked goods.

And for procrastinators, the Last Minute Panic Sale at the WNY Book Arts Center, Dec. 15-16, gives you an eleventh-hour option for finding a thoughtful gift. Browse hand-printed greeting cards and posters plus quality handmade jewelry, housewares and knitwear produced by over 40 vendors.

Need more options? Check out the holiday edition of Queen City Pop-Up — a local multi-vendor holiday marketplace that has taken up temporary residence at 50 Fountain Plaza (corner of Main and Chippewa) in downtown Buffalo. Queen City Pop-Up is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. — 6 p.m. and Saturday noon — 4 p.m., now through Dec. 31.
